Sealants are commonly used in dentistry to both improve and preserve the overall health of a patient’s teeth. Though sealants primarily protect against cavities, they can also help your teeth stay whiter, stronger, and easier to clean. Consult your cosmetic dentist and read on to learn more about sealants and what they can do for your oral health.
What Are Sealants?
Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of a patient’s back teeth. The sealants are applied to the grooved portions that are most susceptible to damage, plaque buildup, and decay.
How Do Sealants Work?
The fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth make them particularly vulnerable to decay. In some patients, these fissures are so deep, narrow, or irregularly shaped that cleaning them can be very difficult. This can create problems for a number of patients, particularly younger ones. The longer these grooves remain improperly cleaned, the more plaque builds up and slowly damages the tooth. Sealants are used to add an extra level of protection to the chewing surface of a patient’s back molars. Sealants prevent plaque and bacteria from building up in a tooth’s fissures and make the teeth easier to clean.
Why Use Sealants?
Unlike conventional fillings, sealants offer the benefit of preventive dental care and do not require invasive drilling and constant replacement. Fillings are used primarily to fill in cavities, while sealants aim to prevent cavities from developing in the first place. Though sealants can degrade over time, they can potentially last for years. Avoiding the need for fillings and preventing the permanent damage that decay can cause will not only save you money in the long run, but also greatly benefit your teeth’s overall health.
